Our research focuses on the marine cyanobacteria Prochlorococcus, the smallest, yet most abundant phytoplankton (microalgae) in the open oceans. Using this foundational organism, we seek to answer fundamental questions in marine ecology and biogeochemistry: how many different “species” of Prochlorococcus are there? how do they co-exist? what are their differential ecological and biogeochemical roles in the ocean? how might this change under future climate scenarios？
